STYLE COACHING INSTITUTE®
PERSONAL STYLING BLOG

** Calling all aspiring Personal Stylists, Image Consultants, Fashion Stylists and Personal Shoppers! **

Over the next few weeks, we’re going be talking about how to develop your ‘sense of style’. In this video, Lesson One deals with ‘defining your personal style as it is right now’. So, if you’re up for a challenge, then grab yourself a quiet half hour, and come join us for these simple Style Steps!

The first thing we’re going to do is take a close look at your current wardrobe. Place some of your personal favourite clothes on your bed. You might find that each of them has something in common or a general theme… Whether it’s that they are elegant, sophisticated, clean-cut styles, or perhaps they’re feminine and figure hugging, or maybe even androgynous… Whatever the theme might be, it’s obviously one that speaks to you on some level.

Becoming aware of what you naturally gravitate towards, helps you to define your own sense of style.

If you have time, try on each item, and ask yourself the following questions…

How does the piece feel when I wear it?

Where does it fit most closely to my body?

Does it hug certain curves or drape over any aspects of my figure?

Does it flare at the hips, or under the bust, or do the lines hang quite straight?

Does the fabric lie flat, or are there any features like flounces, ruffles, ribbons, sequins, pleats, ruching, appliqué or other embellishments?

Is it one of our neutral colours like grey, navy, camel, black or white?

Is it a warm and muted autumn tone like bordeaux wine, shaded spruce, chocolate or mocha brown?

Is it a clear and bold winter colour like sapphire, vibrant purple, or cherry red?

Is it perhaps a distinctive spring colour like coral, apple green, or cornflower blue?

Or maybe it’s from the dusky summer palette, with colours like mulberry, aubergine or smoked violet!

Is it a solid colour, or does it have blocks of colour like we saw in many designs from the 60s?

Does it feature a pattern of any type?

Are there vertical stripes, horizontal, diagonal, slim lines or wide?

Is there a symmetrical or asymmetrical pattern?

Maybe it has a floral motif or a dramatic animal print?

The next thing we’re going to consider, is what your clothes say about you, and defining how you want other people to perceive you. Having a sense of style, also means knowing what’s appropriate for different occasions. Think about the different roles in your life & jot down the different situations you typically repeat each week. Think about how you want to appear, and most importantly, how you want to feel for each of these situations.

And finally for this week, it’s important to also ask yourself what you would like to change about your current wardrobe so you can set some style-related goals…

Would you love to be more adventurous with your choice of colours?

Would you like to have more variety in the types of clothes you choose?

Would you like your clothes to fit you better, or be more flattering?

Would you like to experiment with layering and accessorising?

Would you like to have a greater choice of shoes and boots?

Would you like to start investing in better quality items?

Would you like to declutter your wardrobe and weed out any items you no longer wear? It’s exciting when you start to visualise what you’d like to achieve!

In our next video, we’ll look at how to find inspiration that will help you to develop your sense of style and become more confident in expressing yourself through your clothing choices.

Start a new career doing what you love by training to become a personal stylist and Accredited Style Coach™.

Hi there!

This is Kate here from the Style Coaching™ HQ where we understand the many key factors that go into creating a successful career as an image consultant, personal stylist, personal shopper or Style Coach™. Studying a credible training programme is critical, but there are also personal attributes that we help our ambitious students to develop and nurture within themselves.

Today I would like to run through with you the top 5 inspiring habits of all successful Style Coaches™.

– So, Habit Number One

They ask quality questions! What is my ambition? What am I here to achieve? What is it that I want to contribute as a Style Coach? Who is it that I really want to connect with? What are my dreams? What are my hopes? What kind of feelings do I want to generate every day? And if I have a vision for my career, what specifically does this vision look like?

– In at Number Two

They allow themselves to fall in love with their career! We all know what it feels like to be in love – it’s not hard work to give your time and attention to something that makes you feel alive! If you keep doing more of what makes you joyful, then you are going to radiate the most magnetic energy and guess what happens? People get drawn towards working with you!

– The Third Inspiring Habit  is…

Great Style Coaches choose to have a little faith in themselves! Fear and doubt will be there, but they don’t let it stop them from moving purposefully in the direction that they have decided is right for them. They trust that they can overcome challenges, that they can figure this out, that they CAN and they WILL claim what they aspire to BE, DO and HAVE in life.

– In at Number Four….

They are stubborn and persistent in the pursuit of their goals. But, vitally, they are also FLEXIBLE in their approach! They keep perspective and don’t lose focus when times get tough. They never give up hope or stop trying, but they’re also prepared to be honest about the best route to their destination. They will change their approach as many times as it takes in order to get to where they want to be.

– And Last but not Least,

All great Style Coaches surround themselves with positive people. Instead of listening to those who drag them down with their own fears and limitations, they find an inspiring and passionate peer group. Mentors, who will help a Style Coach to raise their game, up-level their expectations, and expand themselves to truly be the best they can be!

At the Style Coaching Institute® we don’t just believe in the power of appearance; we believe that people are so much more than just a reflection in the mirror and that confidence and positive body-image are vital components of ‘style’ of a personal ‘style’!

Here at the Style Coaching Institute® our training is based on the beliefs that:

* Style is as much about ‘inner confidence’ as it is about the clothes you wear
* Looking good is about embracing what makes you uniquely beautiful
* No matter your size, shape or weight, if you feel confident on the inside, then you will look beautiful on the outside
* Making a good impression is a combination of the right clothes, grooming, body language and attitude

If these beliefs resonate with you, then a career in Personal Styling or Image Consultancy might be selling yourself short! On the other hand, “Style Coaching™” will give you unlimited opportunities for personal and professional growth, fulfilment and rewards. What to wear to an Xmas party

Think for a moment about the outfit you are going to wear for your next celebratory or festive event. I wonder how many of us instantly think of wearing our trusted LBD (little black dress) with some nice accessories? Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, in this article, I would like to discuss and highlight the less conservative option of ‘non-black’ clothes. As a professional image consultant and Style Coach™, I think of it as an invitation to make the leap from dressing with ‘predictability and safety’ at your next event, to dressing with ‘style and sparkle’!

First of all, and strictly speaking, *black* is not a ‘colour’. Instead, it absorbs all other colours! So, why is *black* such a popular choice? Why do we like it so much? I love considering these questions when I am doing professional colour analysis with my clients, and if you’ve ever considered becoming a colour consultant yourself, then you will share my enthusiasm!

The most obvious answer is because it’s a comfortable and safe choice. It transmits a feeling of protection and strength. Many would also argue that it is mysterious. Colour psychology is just fascinating. We all use *black* at various times of our lives: when experiencing mourning, when we want to ‘blend in’ due to low self-esteem or body-image issues, when we want to appear slimmer due to discontent about our body shape or weight, or when we want to feel secure in our wardrobe choices so we don’t ‘get it wrong’. Fashion tells us that black is slimming, seductive, formal, elegant and sophisticated. There are a lot of studies about the psychology of ‘black’, but the main question here is to ask ourselves, “Instead of black, why not bring our outfits to life with vibrant use of colour?” In Style Coaching™, we combine life coaching skills, which helps me to explore how my client ‘feels’ when wearing different colours, and trying different styles - not just how my client ‘looks.

Fashion historians and fashion courses trace the iconic origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel and Jean Patou. They were intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral colour. The little black dress is considered essential to a complete wardrobe by many women and fashion observers. But do we believe we’re radiant wearing black? Is it really flattering us and enhancing our image as much as we would like it to?

Wearing black is certainly functional and turns complex choices into easy ones when you don’t know what to wear to a festive event. When wearing black, you always have the assurance and self-confidence that you will be dressed appropriately. But is black properly translating the state or mood we are in when we attend parties? And, if you are a self-confessed lover of ‘black’, would your opinion change if a colour consultant gave you alternative colour suggestions? This is where, in my opinion, the journey of discovering your style really starts.

During the Style Coach™ training we learned about colour psychology in addition to the colour analysis. Understanding our ‘true’ or ‘wow’ colours can be powerful, as they affect us positively and in profound ways. The colours we wear can be used to create harmony with our own natural colouring, and they essentially become another part of us. One of my friends (and fellow Style Coaches™) recently shared with me that she had clients idealizing black, but it was actually not suiting their skin tone and was stealing their shine. Perhaps this is more common than we realise.

When we choose black during personal shopping trips, are we in fact denying ourselves the opportunity to look for an outfit which will make us look and feel outstanding? Are we missing out on a chance to try something that is outside our comfort zones and a touch different to what we’re used to? Style Coaching™ combines elements of personal branding, so we’re constantly looking for ways to showcase our unique personality and every other factor that becomes a person’s ‘personal brand’.

Imagine yourself walking into the department stores at the start of the festive season, with your personal shopper, when the mannequins are wearing party outfits… What outfits on the mannequins really inspire you? When something catches your eye, what shine is it transmitting to have grabbed your attention?
The aim is to search for something to wear which will not only enhance our silhouette, but which also communicates our own energy, personality and vibrancy. So many of our attributes can be communicated, enhanced and highlighted with our colour choices. Personal styling is about having fun with fashion and creatively expressing yourself, but don’t worry about looking overdressed; instead focus on choosing the right fabric, the right shape, the right length and the right colour. For many of my personal styling clients, wearing a vibrant colour choice can feel like a big transition, in which case, a black outfit can be transformed with even a touch of colour that suits you.
I hope you enjoy choosing your next outfit and that you’re feeling inspired to find a Xmas party dress that will help you feel great during your celebratory occasions!

It’s not enough to just be kind and compliment others; we must be kind to ourselves too.

When you become a certified Style Coach™, you become an expert in every dimension of “beauty” (not just what you see on the surface, but what’s going on beneath the surface too). We believe in the power in appearance (which is why we teach you all the core lessons of image consultancy training and personal styling), but we take this much deeper by combining the power of appearance with life coach training, and self-image psychology. Our focus isn’t just on how you “look”, it’s on how you “feel”.
